Thank you so much, May.
It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Tokyo Rises in Global Ranking of City Brands" that you kindly selected on 7 Dec. 2024.
I have lived in Tokyo for more than half of my life. So, I agree with the most of the article, but I don't agree with the only "Tokyo is leader in science and technology" in it.
Actually, there are many high-tech companies in Tokyo, but most of them are just headquarters.
Meanwhile, laboratories, institutions and universities that are quite good at science are not only in Tokyo, but also in other areas of Japan such as neighboring prefectures of Tokyo have them.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class. |

Thank you so much, May.
It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Japanese Power Companies Sued over Climate Change" that you kindly selected on 5 Nov. 2024.
It's obvious that the plaintiff will lose the lawsuit. Presumably, the plaintiff's attorney will concede the outcome.
However, their real purpose must be to let the world know that they are the first plaintiffs in Japan's history to sue a power company for environmental problems.
Most of the plaintiffs are young, so I assume that their activity can be used as an achievement to apply for entrance exams to universities in Japan.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class. |

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Japan Election: Ruling Coalition Loses its Majority" that you kindly selected on 3 Nov. 2024.
The ruling party failed in the last national election on October 27.
I suppose there are many reasons of the failure, but the main reason why they lost the seats is slush fund as finance scandal. The result of the election was reflected in the idea of the Japanese cizens.
However, I'm concerned that it would take a long time to enact new laws because the opposition parties are likely to oppose them. As a result, Japan will fall behind other countries in many fields and industries.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class. |

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Japan's Reading Habits Revealed: 63% Don't Read Books" that you kindly selected on 20 Oct. 2024.
I have to follow the trend that many Japanese people rarely read books. The main reason is that I'm tied up with work every day, so I can't afford to read books.
I suppose there are other reasons for this trend.
Especially the young generation is likely to pursue time efficiency. So they prefer watching movies to reading novels, because reading novels takes a long time, but watching movies takes only two hours.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class.

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Japan's Widest Gender Pay Gap is in Tochigi" that you kindly selected on 12 Oct. 2024.
The reason why rural areas such as Kochi, Iwate and Nagasaki have the lowest gender pay gap is the family structure.
When it comes to working mothers, in general, grandmothers in rural areas are more likely to help and support mothers with household chores and childcare.
The mothers who are supported can concentrate on their work and are more likely to be promoted.
As a result, female workers can earn more money than female workers in metropolitan areas, of which Tochigi is one.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class. |

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Japan Could Have 80% Renewable Energy by 2035" that you kindly selected on 5 Oct. 2024.
Switching from conventional energy to renewable energy costs a lot because new institutions and equipment are must.
For the early phase of changing the energy, the Japanese government must be debt as an investment.
Of course, the tax of Japanese will be increased and the they will have complaints and oppositions about the energy change.
For this reason, it would be difficult to achive the goal by 2035.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class. |

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Dyes with That? McDonald's Staff in Japan Can Dye Hair" that you kindly selected on 24 Sep. 2024.
This article reminds me of my junior high school days many years ago.
A rule of some junior high schools in my hometown forced students to have buzz hair cut like a a Buddhist monk. My hometown is located in a rural area of Japan. So the people are very conservative and stubborn. This is because the junior high schools had very strict and ridiculous rules.
Meanwhile, schools in metropolitan areas are more tolerant of style than those in rural areas. Since there are many nationalities in Tokyo.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class. |

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Many Japanese Seniors Wish They'd Studied More" that you kindly selected on 22 Sep. 2024.
After reading this artcile, my thoguth is that the 80% rate in this article includes, not only universities and colleges, but also vocational and technical schools, etc.
In the past, when I was a high school student, the percentage of students going on to university was about 30 to 40%, but today the university entrance rate is 60%.
At that time, the following reasons impeded the students to go to universities and colleges.
1) A biased atmosphere in which farmers do not need an educational background.
2) High interest rates on the student loans.
About the 2), there is a way to use a notorious student loan in Japan, but many Japanese are likely to mix up a student loan with a scholarship.
Most of the universities and colleges are private, so they charge high tuition fees, so the student loans may not be sufficient.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class. |

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Recipe to a Long Life: What Is the Okinawan Diet?" that you kindly selected on 15 Sep. 2024.
I forgot to mention that Okinawa Prefecture is no longer the prefecture with the highest life expectancy in Japan.
Today, Nagano Pref. has the highest life expectancy in Japan.
Since Nagano Pref. is not located by the sea, Nagano residents are less likely to eat seafood.
In addition, Nagano Pref. is located in high alttitdude, so the climate is not mild.
Nevertheless, Nagano Pref. has retained highest life expectancy in Japan.
Considering the fact, I suppose other factors, besides food and climate are crucial to longevity, such as exercise habits, frequency of medical checkups, quality of air, and so on.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class. |

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Government Urges Calm Over Japan Rice Shortage" that you kindly selected on August 31 2024.
In the past few days, I've been looking for a bag of rice in some grocery stores, but I haven't found it.
However, large restaurants and convenience stores still serve rice-based dishes.
I suppose the companies probably have other routes to obtain rice or they may use imported rice.
What we can do to get rice is to wait until middle of September, because rice farmers will start harvesting rice and the rice will be released to retailers.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class. |

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Japanese Schools Use AI to Improve Attendance" that you kindly selected on August 25 2024.
I'm suspicious that AI can be used to solve attendance problems in Japan.
The root cause of School avoidance is anxiety about bullying, academic performance, etc.
I admit that new technologies should be used for different kinds of fields, but AI cannot solve School avoidance until the anxiety is resolved.
One of my acquaintances has been absent from school for long days due to another reason. He is studying to pass the paper exams for a private junior high school. However, the current school allows his behavior for now.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class.

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "What Do Foreigners in Japan Think of Japanese Food?" that you kindly selected on August 24 2024.
As I mentioned in the lesson, eating out costs a lot, so I reraly eat out for financial reasons.
If I dine out, I'd like to enjoy Yakiniku, grilled beef, because it's difficult to prepare Yakiniku in my home at the same level as a restaurant, because it's hard to prepare equipment with a strong fire, such as a 'Shichirin'.

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Japanese Worried After First Megaquake Advisory" that you kindly selected on August 18 2024.
It takes a month to restore damaged infrastructure such as electricity, water, gas, etc. based on past major earthquakes.
For that reason, dried food, canned food, bottled water, portable toilets and other emergency goods are not sufficient under severe earth quake happens.
Solar panels and a battery for a house are a must item to spend ordirany life, even if earth quake causes power outage.
However, you don't have any countermeasure if water and gas outage and happens. You have to wait unitl they get restored.

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Japanese-Style Food Items Come to US 7-Elevens" that you kindly selected on August 4 2024.
I admit that lunch boxes in 7-Elevens are good, but the quantity of boxes is quite small.
For kids and women, the quantity would be sufficient enough, but for male adults, the quantity is insignificant.
So they buy two or three lunch boxes to satisfy their appetite. but consequently, the cost will be more expensive than the lunch fee in a restaurant.
This is because I rarely shop at 7-Elevens these days.

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Japan Takes Top Score in Worldwide IQ Test" that you kindly selected on July 29 2024.
As I mentioned in the lesson, I'm skeptical about the result that Japan takes the top score the IQ test for the following reason.
1) In general, most of Japanese people do not have high proficiency in other languages. Of course, they are good in their native language.
2) Nowadays, most of Japanese high school students tend to avoid Math when they are in the second grade of high school, because Math is not mandatory subject. So, the participants are all good at Math.

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "'Night Owls' May Have Better Brains" that you kindly selected on July 20 2024.
When I saw the headline, I was a bit surprised, because it's well known that "early birds" probably have better brains than "night owls" in general.
I think the survey result can be reliable from a numerical point of view, but I don't think that "night owls" might have better brains for the same reason in this article. The survey should be conducted among a wide range of age groups, e.g. 20-80 years old.
However, I prioritize how long we should sleep each day. For instance, I try to have at least 6 hours of sleep a day.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class. |

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "World's Language Learners Show Interest in Japanese" that you kindly selected on July 13 2024.
Increasing the number of Japanese learners is quite beneficial to Japan, because it can boost the Japanese economy.
I beleive that one of the motivations for learning Japanese language is Japanese culture, such as Video games, Anime, Comics, etc, although some experts say they are not essential Japanese products.
So, I suggest that the Japanese government promote the Japanese cultural industries more.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class.

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Samsung Electronics Workers on 'Indefinite' Strike" that you kindly selected on July 12 2024.
As I mentioned in the lesson, only few Japanese companies have unions.
In addition, the power of the unions is diminishing, because the parent companies are struggling to make profits under severe economic conditinos.
As if often the case with traditional Japanese companies, executives of the companies are sent on loan to thieir labor unions. That does not make sense, because the union is prone to obey the parenet company.
As a result, the labor union dues are automatically dedected from the employee's salaries. It's so ridiculous.

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Japan to Boost Pension Enrollment for Foreign Workers" that you kindly selected on June 29 2024.
As I mentioned in the lesson, the current Japanese pension system has the following unfair points as below.
- Elderly citizens can get more money as pension that they paid in the past, but younger generation can get less money that they pay.
If the Japanese government introduces the revised pension system for foreign workers, I expect that the longevity difference between Japanese and foreigners may cause inequality for the following reason.
- Typical Japanese citizens are cautious of their health status than foreign people, the total amount of pension would be different.edifferent. In general, The longer poeple are alive, the more pension they can receive.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class. |

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "45% of Japanese Expats Feel Lonely" that you kindly selected on June 20 2024.
I agree with the idea of 45% of Japanese Expats Feel Lonely.
I suppose whether Japanese feel lonecly depends on each country.
Japanese expats in Asian countries are less likely to feel lonely. Meanwhile, Japanese expats in European countries are more likely to feel lonly, because there is less community in EU counties.
However, I suppose the number of Japanese expats feeling Lonely is decreasing, because they can easily use social media and direct phone calls with live video.

It was an enjoyable, tactful class, as always, from the material based on the article "Indonesia Is Most Generous Country in Global Study" that you kindly selected on June 17 2024.
The study found that religious people are more generous than people who aren't religious, and immigrants tend to be more generous than people who live in their home country. That really makes sense.
Most Japanese are secular and there are few immigrants in Japan. For this reason, Japan is ranked as the 4th least generous country in the world.
However, whether Japanese are generous to strangers or not depends on the area. I suppose this suevey was done in Tokyo city, but western part of Japan are more generaous than people in Japan.
In general, Tokyo residents are likely to be overwhelmed with work and exhausted, so they cannot afford to help strangers.

Every morning I have a few cups of coffee. I believe it is not decaffeinated, because the label says that this coffee contains caffeine.
However, it is just an instant coffee, not made from pure coffee beans, so it might have chemicals in it.

As I said in the lesson, the Internet has advantages and disadvantages. I suppose the advantages outweigh the disadvantages nowadays.
However, people who want to use the Internet, school students should learn computer literacy so as not to be involved in crime.
In fact, elementary school students in Tokyo city are being given laptops to learn computer and Internet skills.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking your next class.
